ADHD & ADD
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder [ADHD] has been called many different things over the years. Recently, it has become common to refer to ADHD as equivalent to ADHD - Hyperactive type, and ADD as equivalent to ADHD - Inattentive Type. It is therefore especially important to be careful and explicit when making a diagnosis.
Although a Psychological Educational assessment is often suggested as a first step in an ADHD assessment for either children or adults, there are situations in which it is not necessary. In the initial interview the clients and I make a decision whether or not to include a full Psych Ed. Assessment. One aspect of the assessment is very important and that is to rule out other causes of ADHD symptoms, and this is one of the reasons why a diagnosis must be made by a physician or a psychologist.
Although some children “grow out of..” ADHD, most do not, and thus there are adults who suffer from this syndrome. In this case, however, some of the symptoms change, making the adult assessment a little more complex.
There are children in the school system who have considerable difficulty adjusting, and who may well have ADHD. Often they are considered behaviour problems. For these children it is important to get a diagnosis and then consider the options for intervention.
