REPEATED READING PLUS
This is a system of teaching reading to virtual non-readers. It is based on the assumption that persons who have difficulty learning to read need continuous, precise, and very finely graded feedback whenever they use whatever skill they have. It is an orchestration of several different techniques, some of which are my original ideas, and some of which are old favourites. They include “The Dot,” Repeated Readings, Flash-sheets, and other miscellaneous ideas.
The system is data directed. Because the feedback system is precise, it can be implemented only on a tutorial basis. Data gathered daily as an integral part of the system is graphed and used to make program decisions. This data is also consolidated to a weekly score and graphed, and this provides a more long-term view of progress. While the system was originally started to help children who had attention problems, it has been used over the years in a variety of problem situations. It was also found that even at a very early developmental stage the technique works well.
